About me

Posted in: by LaRene Ellis on April 21, 2008

How did I get myself here ! It’s really a dream that I didn’t know existed. Have you ever just moved through life and then one day. You realize that you are in a place that you never thought was possible.

It all started one day after I decided to take a vacation from selling real estate. For the first time in five years, I had sold my entire inventory. I’m a principal real estate broker.

Five days into my vacation, I woke up with no voice. If I tried to force a whisper, it cased me to cough uncontrollable. Quickly, I found myself trapped in a room with a humidifier and air purifier. I could not even go outside because of the air quality.

After a few days, I found myself very bored. Looking for away to entertain myself, I decided to write a story that would just be for me. My oldest son happened to stop by each day to see how I was doing. He always found me in front of the computer. When I wrote on my pad that I was writing a story for just me, he wanted to read it.

I told him “no.” He wouldn’t let up. Each day, he asked. After he promised to not tell anyone, I let him take the pages home.

At our next family dinner, he asked me questions about the culture of these fictional people. I would write it down and pass it to him.My other children were all adults and they wanted to know what we were talking about. He told them with my permission. My other children wanted to read the story.

I agreed to let them. After a couple of days, my second to the oldest son called and was angry that he was up until 2:00 am reading. He had to get up at 6:00 am to get ready for work. He loved the story. They all started to pressure to get it published. I didn’t want to do it because of the work it would take and I had no idea on how to do it.

As long as I keep saying “no,” I stayed trapped in my room with the humidifier and air purifier. Ninety plus days later, I agreed to get it published. Immediately, my voice came back and I stopped coughing.

To keep my promise, I sent the manuscript, which was written in conversation and not a novel, to a local publisher hoping they would tell me my story was weak and they wouldn’t put the work in to get it ready to be published.

They sent it back with a strong “yes.” The story was strong but my writing style needed to change. I had mixed emotions. Part of me wanted to complete the story and the other part wanted a no. Mainly, I did not know how to do it and I knew the learning curse that was ahead of me.

Being concerned that I would lose my voice again, if I didn’t see this through, I threw myself into the project putting my broker’s license on hiatus.

By doing it, I fell in love with writing. It’s fun to write a fictional story complete with culture and traditions. Ihad always made fun of people who loved to write. Mainly, I didn’t think I could do it. With me getting sick, I discovered a new talent.

Today, I’m a wife, mother of six and I have grandchildren. I hope you enjoy my story as much as I did writing it. Each character is a little part of me and I hope you find yourself also in them.
